Wayfarers—A Photographic Journey

A glimpse of summer-time England through the lens of Nashmia Haroon and Hassan Tahir Latif. The show is on view by appointment only at Tagh’eer Lahore till October 2024. Please contact the gallery directly to visit.

In the grand tradition of at-home projections of summer holiday snaps, Tagh’eer (a creative space in Lahore) recently opened ‘Wayfarers’, a photography exhibit where Nashmia Haroon and Hassan Tahir Latif presented vignettes from their summer travels to England. Earlier this summer, both the photographers travelled to Bradford for the Bradford Literature Festival, as part of an international festival exchange supported by the British Council Pakistan. ‘Wayfarers’ records this experience in a series of intimate and candid observations of two travellers passing through.

Nashmia’s documentation is displayed as a travel album pasted on a wall. The viewer is able to immerse themselves in in the travelogue through a combination of colourful visuals and text. The small size of her photographs reminds us of the physical albums of old, but the text is reminiscent of Instagram captions. Presented linearly, Nashmia’s photographs allow us to be part of her journey: from conferences, to field days, museum visits, family time and all else in between. Consequently, display is a fun marriage of analogue and digital travelogues.

Hassan’s work on the other hand is a smaller selection of black and white, mostly urban and architectural images. Hung opposite Nashmia’s work, they present a stark contrast to the vibrancy of the latter’s journey. Through Hassan’s work we go on a different journey, one where crowded tourist spots are captured almost devoid of the mass of people normally present there. There are glimpses of museums, high streets and alleyways—fleeting moments of quietness in otherwise busy areas.

Together Nashmia’s colourful depiction of the minutiae of life and Hassan’s moody, introspective moments, ‘Wayfarers’ records a series of intimate and candid observations of two travellers passing through.
